When children are sick, they can get dehydrated easily. Commercial rehydration drinks are full of artificial colors and flavors that can make nausea and vomiting worse. This recipe is an electrolyte solution and is easy to make with a few basic ingredients that can be found at any grocery store.
Raw honey – Honey is full of vitamins and minerals, is anti-inflammatory, and may help settle the stomach; plus, it provides some glucose and fructose for a child who isn’t able to eat much.
Turmeric – Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and may help stop nausea.
Lemon/Lime – This provides flavor, but the sourness may also help to settle the stomach.
Sea salt – Sea salt contains important electrolytes to help replenish fluid balance.
Baking soda – Baking soda also contains important electrolytes to help replenish fluid balance.
Lemon Sports Drink
• 3 tablespoons raw honey
• 3 slices fresh turmeric root (you may substitute with fresh ginger, if needed, or omit.)
• 1 lemon or lime, juiced
• 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
• 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
• 4 cups water
Add 1/8 teaspoon of salt substitute (i.e., potassium chloride) and/or magnesium chloride (i.e., epsom salts). These are additional electrolytes, needed to restore fluid balance.
1. Boil 1 cup of water with fresh turmeric or ginger root for 10 minutes until the water is golden in color.
2. Remove the root slices from the water. Stir in the sea salt, baking soda, and raw honey until dissolved.
3. Add the lemon or lime juice, plus the remaining water (or use ice to chill it quickly if you prefer), and stir to combine.
4. Refrigerate until serving. This lasts for up to 3 days.
Dosing – Drink slowly as needed; there is no maximum dose.
Good to Treat – Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and dehydration from physical activity.
Do not give to children under 1 year of age.
